The observatory was opened in 2009 and it is located in the center of Makarska, near the promenade! It was built on a hill surrounded by pine trees and that gives you a breathtaking view at night!
The monument next to the observatory was build in 1974, as a memorial center for fallen soldiers from the Makarska Riviera during World War II. It was designed by the famous architect Matija Salaj.
In addition to an observatory, in 2017 the Astro park was opened. The park is a children’s playground arranged according to the concept of the solar system! The first project of this kind in Europe, where children learn about the universe by playing.
The Observatory and the playground are ideas of the Makarska astronomical association DAUP-Orion which organizes various workshops and programs for all generations. They take care of the Observatory voluntary. The most popular manifestation is Dani svemira (Days of the Universe), held in August.
